PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Treatments

PRP

What is PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

PRP is also known in the media as the “vampire facial”.

This treatment involves injecting the client’s blood into areas of concern, stimulating collagen production. PRP consists of two elements; the plasma, the liquid part of the blood, and platelets which play an important role in the body’s healing. Platelets contain growth factors which trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration in the treated area. This initiates a healing response by attracting stem cells, stimulating cell growth, tissue remodelling and renewing collagen deposits. This then slows down the ageing process, improving the tone, texture and appearance of the skin, with a gradual increase in skin thickness and vitality.

Please note the effects of the treatment are progressive and not immediate. For ongoing results, monthly treatments for 3 – 4 months are recommended, followed by a maintenance treatment every 6 months.

Indications for PRP

Areas recommended for this treatment include, the face, eyes, neck, hands, décolletage and hair production can be increased if injected into the thinning scalp. Because you are using your blood there are minimum safety concerns for any allergic response, and PRP can be used around any sensitive areas, which are not suited for other treatments.

Contraindications for PRP

PRP is not suitable for all individuals and those with the following conditions are contraindicated from receiving the treatment; platelet dysfunction syndrome, critical thrombocytopenia, hemodynamic instability, septicaemia, local infection at the site to be treated, pregnancy, breastfeeding, urticaria, and cancer.

The PRP procedure

Using an aseptic technique, the area to be treated is cleaned and then a topical numbing cream is applied to reduce discomfort. 10mls of blood per area treated is taken from the arm using a needle, and then the blood is spun for 5 minutes in a centrifuge. The force of the spinning separates the blood components. The platelets and plasma are then drawn off from the spun blood resulting in 3 – 5mls of PRP. This is then injected into the treatable area using microneedles. The procedure takes up to 1 hour. It is recommended to avoid alcohol and drink plenty of water for 2 days following treatment. It is requested to refrain from alcohol for 24 hours prior, any blood thinning medication and to drink plenty of water and eat prior to treatment to optimise good blood taking and reduce bruising and bleeding.

Side Effects of PRP Injection Treatments

The treatment can be considered uncomfortable depending on the area treated, however, a topical numbing agent is added to reduce these levels. Immediately following treatment the skin will be red and slightly blotchy, pain or itching may be experienced, but these generally subside within a couple of hours. Mild bruising and slight swelling may occur, therefore it is recommended to allow 7 days for side effects to subside. Rare potential side effects include mild nausea, dizziness, localised infection and nerve injuries.
